The Prop 98 folks must be cool: they’re on MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, and BlueChowder. And it looks like the pack of lies, half-truths and distortions they are using is making an impact on young voters.
Working to create a “surge of interest in the election among young voters,” Prop. 8 supporters have also launched iProtectMarriage.com, a new website designed to mislead young people about Prop. 8.
If the latest poll is right, “Yes on 8” is gaining ground among young voters. A poll conducted by SurveyUSA on behalf of four California television stations showed a sharp uptick in support for Proposition 8, with 47% for Yes, 42% for No, and 10% undecided.
Of most concern, the new poll shows some of the strongest support among young voters, those aged 18 to 34, a group that previous polls had shown to favor same-sex marriage. The subsample of voters in this survey between 18 and 34 showed support for Prop. 8 by a margin of 53% to 39%.
Why this shift? It could be an ad campaign that is blanketing the airwaves in California, spreading half-truths and lies – like a claim churches “may” lose their tax exempt status if Prop 8 fails that is mouthed by a “Pepperdine Law School” professor. Apparently, at Pepperdine they haven’t heard about the Bill of Rights which guarantees freedom of religion.
Backed by the Mormon Church and millions of dollars from the Roman Catholic “Knights of Columbus,” foes of gay marriage have raise about $10 million more than those who support the equality of all Californians before Civil Law. Go here (http://www.eqca.org) to sign up to help defeat Prop 8.
